Cavern 4, the new shop operated by Workwise, located at 4 Whiting Street, Bury St Edmunds, is a top quality arts, crafts and furnishings store. Choose from fine oak furniture and intricate woodworking, all produced by Workwise trainees in the workshop of the
Furniture Making Department, as well as individually-designed Irish linen
patchwork quilts,
bags and
cushions and soft furnishings, all of which are hand-crafted by Workwise trainees in the
Textiles, Crafts and Design Department, and engraved glasses, bowls and vases also designed and produced by Workwise trainees in the
Glassware Department. All items are individually-made and extremely beautiful.

Workwise has also managed to attract other local artists and craftspeople who, as soon as they saw the high quality of the trainees work, wanted to sell their own pieces alongside them. Everything from jewellery, to paintings, decorative fire screens, sculptures, pottery, china, and candles, and much more.

Downstairs at Cavern 4 is a gallery exhibiting fine art and sculptures. The works of artists featured in the gallery changes regularly. Among the Suffolk artists and craftspeople whose work has been showcased at Cavern 4 are artists
Jackie Coote and
Sylvia Paul, both of whom have exhibited in London, and ceramicist Leah Hicks who has exhibited all over the world with the British Council.

The gallery is available free of charge for exhibitions although Workwise will expect to take a share of any sales made. Cavern 4 is about as far from being a stereotypical charity shop as you can possibly get. Workwise’s vision is for people with mental health problems to have the same employment opportunities as everyone else, and to be able to command the same wages. The charity itself already employs former trainees and has been successful in helping others find new jobs and get back on their feet.

This shop is truly a treasure trove of wonderful crafts, textiles, art and one off furniture pieces. The layout and space of the shop makes it a pleasurable experience wondering around looking at the individual pieces. Highly recommended.

Cavern 4 in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, is no traditional charity shop. It’s a craft-lovers’ paradise of quality oak furniture, individually designed quilts, bags and cushions and beautifully engraved glasswork.
